Did you know that any feeling only lasts in the body for 90 seconds? After that, it’s your thoughts that determine whether the emotion stays or dissipates.
When we react to something in our environment, a chemical process occurs in the body that lasts for up to 90 seconds. Any lingering emotion after that is usually a result of how we continue thinking about the situation.
Think about it — when was the last time you let anger, sadness, worry, or feelings of inadequacy build up until they felt overwhelming? Those emotions are simply thoughts traveling through the body, trying to communicate something. For example, sadness often signals a loss of someone or something important, and it’s up to us to replace that loss with something fulfilling to truly feel better.
How to Apply the 90-Second Rule
-
Notice the negative feeling as it arises.
-
Take a few deep breaths to stay present.
-
Say to yourself: “I choose to stay present and content, therefore I easily release this negative emotion.”
-
Allow the emotion to leave your body naturally, without adding extra thoughts that keep it alive.
By paying attention to your thoughts and being kind to yourself, you stop holding onto emotions longer than necessary. Over time, this practice helps reprogram your subconscious and supports emotional balance.
